Cherokee overview

The Jeep Cherokee is a compact five-seat crossover that returned as an all-new model for 2026 and is built around a turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid system. Every model comes with four-wheel drive and a 3,500-pound tow rating. For 2027 the lineup widens with a Trail Rated Trailhawk, plus two Altitude trims, and it is a good fit for shoppers who want Jeep styling, long highway range and light trail ability without a plug.

The Midwest take

The Cherokee is a compact crossover with four-wheel drive on every trim and a self-charging hybrid powertrain that never needs a plug, which suits an apartment parking lot in Minneapolis or a rural driveway with no outlet for 50 feet. Jeep estimates over 500 miles per tank, helpful on the long hauls between Chicago and Minneapolis or Omaha and Des Moines, although the Trailhawk's EPA rating is a more modest 33/29/31 mpg. Ground clearance is 9.0 inches on the Trailhawk, which is enough for packed snow and gravel but not for deep drifts. The 3,500-pound tow rating covers a small trailer or snowmobile. It is built in Toluca, Mexico.

Hybrid efficiency without a charging cable

The 1.6-liter turbo four works with electric motors and a small battery that refills through braking. Jeep estimates up to 39 mpg in the city and 37 combined, with more than 500 miles possible on one tank, which it calls the most fuel-efficient Jeep ever made without a plug.

Four-wheel drive comes standard

Every Cherokee uses the Active Drive II 4x4 system, so you do not pay extra for traction. The 3,500-pound tow rating is the same on every model, and Jeep says it is the only vehicle in its class rated for 24 inches of water fording when properly equipped.

Trailhawk goes further off pavement

The announced Trailhawk adds a two-speed transfer unit that Jeep calls class-exclusive, with a Rock mode, a 2.92 low range and a 37.5:1 crawl ratio. Skid plates, special front and rear fascias, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires round out the kit, and the vehicle is flat-tow capable behind a motorhome.

Roomy for its class

The wheelbase is 113 inches and the cabin seats five. Cargo space measures 29.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 62.2 cubic feet with the second row folded, and every trim has a 12.3-inch touchscreen.

Cherokee questions, answered

Is the Jeep Cherokee hybrid a good choice for Midwest winters?

It is a strong commuter choice. Four-wheel drive is standard, the hybrid system does not rely on plug-in charging, and the Trailhawk adds a two-speed transfer unit and 17-inch all-terrain tires. Like any hybrid it will return less than its best fuel economy in deep cold, so treat the window sticker numbers as a summer best case.

Does the Jeep Cherokee need to be plugged in?

No. It is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in. The 1.08-kWh battery charges through braking, so you fill it with gas like any other vehicle. That is a practical advantage over plug-in hybrids if you park on the street or in a shared lot.

Is the 2027 Jeep Cherokee a hybrid?

Yes. Every 2027 Cherokee uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with electric motors and a 1.08-kWh battery. The battery recharges through braking, so there is no plug.

How much can the 2027 Jeep Cherokee tow?

The Cherokee is rated to tow 3,500 pounds, and four-wheel drive comes standard on every trim. Jeep also says the announced Trailhawk can be flat-towed behind an RV.

What is the gas mileage of the 2027 Jeep Cherokee?

Jeep estimates up to 39 mpg city and 37 mpg combined for the regular trims, with more than 500 miles of range per tank. The Trailhawk's spec sheet lists a lower 33 city, 29 highway and 31 combined, so check the window sticker for the trim you are considering.

How much does the 2027 Jeep Cherokee cost?

Jeep announced the entry-level Cherokee at $37,125 including a $1,995 destination charge, which works out to $35,130 before destination. The announced Trailhawk starts at $44,625 including destination, or $42,630 before it.

What is new on the 2027 Jeep Cherokee?

The big news is the Trailhawk, with a two-speed transfer unit and a 37.5:1 crawl ratio. Jeep also added Laredo Altitude and Limited Altitude trims and new paint colors including Fathom Blue and Ghost.

Is the Jeep Cherokee back in production?

Yes. Jeep reintroduced the Cherokee name as an all-new compact SUV for the 2026 model year, and it is built at the Toluca Assembly Complex in Mexico.
