Grand Cherokee overview

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV sold in two lengths: the standard two-row model with five seats, and the longer Grand Cherokee L with a third row. For 2027 it offers a 3.6-liter V6 on Laredo and Laredo X and a 324-hp turbo four on Laredo Altitude and above, with Trailhawk and Overland returning and a new Laredo Upland aimed at off-road looks for less. It suits families who want one vehicle for daily driving, road trips and the occasional trail or tow.

The Midwest take

The Grand Cherokee is the sensible Midwest Jeep: five seats (six or seven on the three-row L), a quiet cabin, and a 6,200-pound tow rating that covers a bass boat or a smaller camper. If you are shopping in snow country, order 4x4. The lower trims can be rear-drive, and a Grand Cherokee that has to climb out of a driveway in Duluth or Sioux City is a poor place to save a few thousand dollars. Trailhawk's air suspension raises it to 11.4 inches for deep drifts, though most buyers will never need that. Jeep builds it at the Detroit Assembly Complex, both the Mack and Jefferson plants, and Stellantis lists its 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 turbo engine as a Dundee, Michigan product. The three-row Grand Cherokee L is sold alongside it for 2027, priced $2,000 above the two-row on every shared trim.

Two engines, one clear step up

The 3.6-liter V6 makes 293 hp and handles everyday driving and a 6,200-pound trailer. The 2.0-liter Hurricane turbo four gives you 324 hp and 332 lb-ft with the same tow rating, and it comes standard from Laredo Altitude up.

Real off-road credentials for a family SUV

Trailhawk pairs the turbo engine with Quadra-Lift air suspension, a two-speed transfer case, all-terrain tires and Trail Rated hardware. Jeep claims best-in-class ground clearance of 11.4 inches in the air suspension's highest off-road setting, plus a 36-degree approach angle and a 24.4-degree breakover angle.

Laredo Upland: the Trailhawk look for less

The announced Laredo Upland borrows the Trailhawk styling, with 18-inch wheels, 265/60R18 all-terrain tires, a body-color roof and tow hooks, but Jeep prices it well below Trailhawk. It is aimed at buyers who want the style and some of the grip without the full off-road setup.

Two lengths, up to three rows

The standard Grand Cherokee seats five on a 116.7-inch wheelbase, with 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 70.8 with it folded. The Grand Cherokee L stretches to a 121.7-inch wheelbase and 204.9 inches overall, adds a third row for six or seven, and holds up to 84.6 cubic feet.

Grand Cherokee questions, answered

Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee good in heavy snow?

Yes if it has 4x4. The Grand Cherokee offers Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Drive II 4x4 systems along with the Selec-Terrain traction management system, and ground clearance runs from 8.4 inches standard to 11.4 on a raised Trailhawk. Rear-drive models exist on the lower trims, so confirm the drivetrain on any truck you are considering.

Should I buy a Grand Cherokee with the V6 or the turbo four in the Midwest?

Both are rated to tow 6,200 pounds. The 3.6-liter V6 (293 hp) comes on Laredo and Laredo X, while the 2.0-liter turbo (324 hp, 332 lb-ft) is standard from Laredo Altitude up and is the better pull from a stop on a snowy hill. Fuel economy is close, so choose on trim and drivetrain more than engine.

How much can the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee tow?

Both the 3.6-liter V6 and the 2.0-liter turbo four are rated to tow 6,200 pounds when properly equipped, in 2WD or 4WD.

What engines does the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee have?

A 3.6-liter V6 with 293 hp comes on Laredo and Laredo X. Laredo Altitude and every trim above it use the 2.0-liter Hurricane turbo four, which makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic. There is no 4xe plug-in hybrid in Jeep's 2027 Grand Cherokee lineup.

What is the difference between the 2027 Grand Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee L?

The Grand Cherokee L is the three-row version. It has a 121.7-inch wheelbase against 116.7 inches, is 204.9 inches long against 193.5, seats six or seven instead of five and holds up to 84.6 cubic feet of cargo against 70.8. Jeep's pricing shows it $2,000 above the two-row model on each shared trim, starting at $41,730. Trailhawk is offered only on the two-row body.

What are the new Grand Cherokee trims for 2027?

Trailhawk returns for 2027 and is in Jeep's configurator now. Jeep has also announced an Overland and a new Laredo Upland with Trailhawk-style looks and all-terrain tires; neither is in the online configurator yet, so ask a dealer about timing.

How much does the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Jeep's website lists the two-row Grand Cherokee from $39,730 before destination in November 2026, and the three-row Grand Cherokee L from $41,730. The Trailhawk was shown at about $53,625, and Jeep's launch announcement put the Overland at $57,895 including destination.

How much ground clearance does the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk have?

Jeep rates it at up to 11.4 inches with the air suspension in its highest setting. In its standard position, the Trailhawk measures 8.5 inches.
