Compass overview

The Jeep Compass is the smallest and most affordable Jeep SUV in the lineup, a five-seat crossover with a 200-hp turbo four and four-wheel drive on every trim. It celebrates its 20th anniversary in the 2027 model year, with adaptive cruise control now standard across the range. It is a sensible pick for city and suburban drivers who want the Jeep badge, snow-ready traction and a few real off-road options through the Trailhawk.

The Midwest take

The Compass is the price-conscious way into a Jeep with four-wheel drive. Jeep Active Drive is standard on every trim for 2027, along with a 200-hp turbo four. Remote start and heated front seats are listed on every trim, two small features that matter on a freezing-rain morning in St. Louis or Columbus. Ground clearance is 8.1 inches, so it is a snow-belt commuter more than a drift-buster. The 2,000-pound tow rating is modest: it fits a jet-ski trailer or a small utility trailer, but not a camper. The 36.3-foot turning circle is easy in tight Chicago garages. Jeep builds the Compass in Toluca, Mexico.

A turbo engine on every trim

The 2.0-liter turbo four makes 200 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, which Jeep markets as best in class for a standard engine. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic and engine stop-start, and it is the only powertrain offered.

Four-wheel drive is not an option

Every Compass comes with Jeep Active Drive, so all-weather traction is included in the $29,990 starting price rather than sold as an add-on. The setup suits snowy commutes and gravel roads.

Trailhawk steps up the capability

The Trailhawk adds Active Drive Low, a two-speed power transfer unit that Jeep calls class-exclusive, giving a low-range gear and a 20:1 crawl ratio. It also raises ground clearance to 8.6 inches and improves the approach angle from 16.1 to 30.4 degrees, which makes it the most off-road capable Compass.

Tech and convenience arrive for 2027

Adaptive cruise control is now standard on every trim. Limited, Limited Altitude and Trailhawk get a wireless charging pad and second-row USB ports, and an optional Driver Assist Package adds a 360-degree camera and a garage door opener.

Compact outside, usable inside

The 103.8-inch wheelbase keeps it easy to park, and the turning circle is 36.3 feet. Behind the second row there are 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space, and folding the seats opens up 59.8 cubic feet.

Compass questions, answered

Is the Jeep Compass good in Minnesota snow?

For commuting and errands, yes. It has standard 4x4, a turbo engine and an 8-speed automatic, and the Trailhawk adds a two-speed transfer unit with a 20:1 crawl ratio. With 8.1 inches of clearance, deep unplowed snow is the limit, and winter tires are the single best upgrade.

Can a Jeep Compass tow a pontoon or camper?

No. The rating is up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped, which suits a small utility trailer or a pair of personal watercraft. Anything bigger belongs on a Grand Cherokee, Gladiator, Durango or Ram.

What engine does the 2027 Jeep Compass have?

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque is the only engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It is standard on every trim, and Jeep Active Drive 4x4 comes with it.

How much does the 2027 Jeep Compass cost?

The 2027 Compass starts at $31,985 including destination, which works out to $29,990 before the $1,995 destination charge. Jeep's website showed the Trailhawk at about $34,650.

How much can the 2027 Jeep Compass tow?

Jeep's spec sheet lists up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped, which suits a small utility trailer but not a travel trailer or camper.

Is the Jeep Compass all-wheel drive?

Yes. Jeep Active Drive is standard on every 2027 Compass, so there is no front-wheel-drive version. The Trailhawk adds a two-speed power transfer unit for low-range gearing.

What is new on the 2027 Jeep Compass?

Adaptive cruise control is standard across the range, and the Limited, Limited Altitude and Trailhawk trims add a wireless charging pad and second-row USB ports. Optional lighting and driver assist packages are new for the higher trims.

What is the difference between Compass Limited and Limited Altitude?

Both share the 2.0-liter turbo, the 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 screen and heated leatherette seats. Limited Altitude moves up to 19-inch Satin Granite Crystal wheels and adds a heated steering wheel, where Limited has 18-inch diamond-cut wheels. For 2027 Limited Altitude costs just $995 more, $35,145 against $34,150.
